"Maps for Lost Lovers" Aslam Nedeem
Religion is part of the culture. It shapes our culture of acceptance or negation of the phenomenon that is the belief in the divinity. So there is no problem when they brought up in Western culture at large we are members of the community we are Christians or even atheists. Or vice versa: we Muslims live in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Turkey ... (of course it is a kind of simplification). All this falls within the cultural norms. Worse, however, when one of the elements of this seemingly simple puzzle no longer fit together. But the biggest drama seems to be uncompromising persistence in native culture, which, despite changes in the cultural environment (ignoring the reason for this change), is completely at the reality. Then there may be conflicts. Not only the exterior, which appear racist movements, but also the interior, which split a given community (apart from quantifying this phenomenon.)
book "Maps for Lost Lovers" is the story Pakistan, large family, who arrived in the seventies of the twentieth century Britain. The family left their beloved country in search of a better life. Life, which, though conducted as far away from land of Muhammad, is the perfect and most faithful way resemble the pre-emigration. Pakistanis on English soil, try to create their own enclaves exist. Ghetto, where the shops are owned by them, offer them for home goods and materials. The law laid down by the Koran is also found to translate the English law doctrine. Second Pakistan in the heart of the British crown. Therefore, is thought not to extramarital love between two people in love - and Chanda Jungu , which clearly goes beyond the accepted norms of the Pakistani community. A pair of lovers must bend. Mete out punishment in accordance with the rule, the girl's brothers. This murder is shrouded skeleton feature of the book. The book starts with the disappearance of the characters, and ends with the sentencing of murderers. But beyond missing Jungu and Chanda novel has two major (perhaps the most important) characters Shamas is - 65 year old social work, which tries to integrate the smaller of the Muslim British citizens, countrymen to help in dealing with all possible formality, an advocate of assimilation and his wife Kaukab, a woman believing that at all costs trying to stop the myth " Blessed Pakistan ", true to tradition and religion. Two opposition figures, which represent a totally different vision of emigration. Emigration, which for men is a great new chance for development and women who fight for their own identity, longing for the homeland of their ancestors.
"Maps for Lost Lovers" is a beautiful and poetic book, reminiscent of "Snow," Pamuk (settlement with the tradition) and "stone of patience" Rahimiego (literary artistry, feminine form). Nominated for the Booker Prize, impresses with its minimalist language and multi-faceted approach to the problem of emigration (such as British racism.) The author, himself of Pakistani origin, gave us a true and reliable witness of suffering, which is manifested in poddańczości tradition, but also a longing for what is lost - a country of their ancestors.
My Rating: 4.5 / 6
